Lublin and Chisinau together in an international project for sustainable transport

The City of Lublin in cooperation with the City of Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, implements the international project "MOVE IT like Lublin - a Chisinau public transport sustainable development initiative" financed by the European Union. Today (January 19), representatives of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Republic of Moldova and the authorities of Chisinau and Lublin participated in a discussion panel combined with a press conference. The topic of the online meeting was to discuss the cooperation so far, presenting good practices on the part of Lublin and defining further joint activities in the project.

– The city of Lublin has been constantly developing collective transport for nearly 70 years. Currently, it is focused primarily on electromobility and ecology. The solutions we implement have a real impact on a constatly improving public transport operating in Lublin. I am glad that the competences and knowledge in this field that we have acquired over the years will support the City of Chisinau in the process of developing public transport. The "MOVE IT like Lublin" project is an opportunity for both Chisinau and Lublin to gain new, valuable experience in an international project, but also a great opportunity to promote our city and Lublin's solutions regarding public transport abroad - says Krzysztof Żuk, Mayor City of Lublin.

– The implemented project is for us, as local authorities, a unique opportunity to exchange experiences in the context of urban development of the City of Chisinau, with support of the European Union. I would like every inhabitant and guest of the capital to feel the effects achieved over the past few years regarding public transport, which we are trying to change and develop - says Ion Ceban, Mayor General of the City of Chisinau.

The aim of the project is to reform the urban public transport management system in Chisinau. Under the project, the City of Chisinau, in close cooperation with the City of Lublin, will strive to achieve three main goals: improving the city's transport policy at the municipal level; increasing the institutional capacity of the Chisinau City Hall, in line with the European Union practices in the field of urban mobility, and improving the quality of public transport management in Chisinau by implementing innovative sustainable solutions and technologies. As part of the project, a modern Traffic Monitoring Centre will be built and a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan for Chisinau will be developed. The role of the City of Lublin is to provide substantive support to the city of Chisinau,

As part of the project, following actions have been planned:

  • participation in study visits to two European cities that use modern solutions in public transport (proposed cities are Prague and Amsterdam/Utrecht);
  • participation in international transport fairs (Transexpo/Kielce and Busworld/Bruksela) in order to get acquainted with the latest technical solutions
  • in public transport;
  • consultation of documents, reports and strategies on public transport in Chisinau;

In addition, the most important initiatives that have already been implemented under the project include, among others: organization of last year's edition of the European Sustainable Transport Week in Lublin, which was attended by a delegation of the City of Chisinau, and development of a report on recommendations regarding anti-Covid solutions used in public transport, on the basis of which planned purchases of equipment and measures to reduce Covid-19 transmission will be made.
